HSB Green Cleans!

In honor of World Environment Day (June 5), the DHS Eco Council sponsored Green Cleanup Days at the Human Services Building. For three days, HSB staff members were encouraged to recycle paper, plastic and aluminum materials; throw away trash; and clean their work areas with eco-friendly cleaning products provided by DHS.

In addition to the cleaning, the Eco Council held several side activities to share eco information in a fun, hands-on way. While cleaning, staff was encouraged to look through their workspace for items that could be used for a scavenger hunt. Staff members were provided with a list of items that they could photograph for points. Some of the items on the list demonstrated positive green actions - such as a current bus pass or an item made of recycled materials - while other items showed how items can linger in our workspace longer than expected - such as expired food or dust.

On the final day of the event, the Eco Council held an item swap where staff members could donate unwanted office supplies or decorative items and “shop” the selection of free items searching for a new home. An awards ceremony was held after the swap to thank Green Cleanup Days participants and to give prizes to the top three scorers in the scavenger hunt and two randomly drawn participants.

The Eco Council considered the activities at HSB to be part of a pilot program, and as such, they are eager to share tips and ideas with staff in other DHS buildings looking to be more environmentally friendly.

“We’re extremely pleased with the event’s success and hope to find enthusiastic staff members who will take the lead and bring Green Cleanup Days to other DHS offices,” said Brian Bell, Eco Council Chair. “More than sixty HSB staff members participated in this event and learned the importance of not only maintaining a clean work environment but also cleaning in a way that is eco friendly.”
