Flowering of Insight
Flowering of Insight (FOI) began more than 20 years ago as an exhibit featuring artwork by local artists receiving county behavioral health services. After the creation of DHS, the exhibit was expanded to include all DHS consumer-artists. While FOI was discontinued as a DHS-sponsored event in 2010, a group of ambitious representatives from Goodwill of Southwestern PA— Elderberry Junction, Mainstay Life Services, Mercy Intellectual Disabilities Services, Mon Yough Community Services, and PA Connecting Communities (PACC) joined together with community members to reestablish the event.
The Flowering of Insight 2012, “Feel Good” art exhibit got off to a wonderful start with a reception at Oakland’s Carnegie Library Gallery at Main on May 3, 2012. During the month of May, the gallery hosted the collection of over 100 pieces that included paintings, drawings and mixed medium artwork created by artists with disabilities.
“I was happy to contribute to planning FOI 2012,” shared Mary Figlar, Community Liaison Supervisor for the Office of Intellectual Disabilities (OID). “The artists’ enthusiasm in sharing their works at the reception showed us how important it is to continue this tradition.”
The committee is already planning FOI 2013, continuing the opportunity for artists to showcase their creativity and for the community to be engaged in learning about the talents of people with disabilities through their artwork.
