KUDOS: Thanks to DHS staff member, Act 33/34 Clearances Required for Youth Athletics Coaches and Volunteers
Many athletic associations in local communities do not have a formalized policy that requires volunteers or coaches to verify their Act 33/34 clearances. Additionally, many youth coaches feel they need more training on how to recognize the signs of child abuse and how to report potential issues.
Hoping to bring this issue to light, Joanne Witkowski, Family Advocate Specialist in the Office of Children, Youth and Families (CYF), drafted a letter and proposal request to local leaders expressing the critical need to require Act 33/34 clearances for coaches and volunteers operating youth sports programs.
Mayor Ravenstahl and City of Pittsburgh Public Works responded to the need by creating a policy that requires Act 33/34 clearances for any coach or volunteer operating a youth sports program that utilizes fields serving City of Pittsburgh children and youth. The policy will go into effect in 2013.
Great work, Joanne!
