Helping Parents Think about Caregiver Choice

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to recognize that we all play a role in promoting the social and emotional well-being of children. For 2012, DHS has expanded last year’s Child Abuse Prevention Month theme, Choose Your Partner Carefully, to include all potential caregivers.

While a parent may find it difficult to believe that a lover, relative or close friend could ever hurt his or her child, it happens. The 2012 Choose Your Partner/Caregiver Carefully – Your Baby is Counting on You campaign encourages parents to think carefully about whether a potential caregiver is responsible, mature and knowledgeable enough to care for a child.

DHS - in partnership with A Child’s Place at Mercy; Family Resources; Center for Health Equity, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health; Pittsburgh Police and The Fred Rogers Company - has produced two brochures for the campaign. One brochure provides tips to help parents assess the temperament and experience of a romantic partner before leaving a child with him or her. The second brochure reinforces the message of the first, but expands the message to cover all caregivers. It also includes a tear-off resource for posting important numbers, tips and reminders.

Throughout the month, DHS and its partners will distribute the brochures to Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, area schools districts, state and federal legislators, and the Pittsburgh Police department. An article on the campaign will appear in the April 2012 edition of the Allegheny County Medical Society Bulletin.

If you would like to order copies of the brochures, please contact 412-350-3433 or email Christine.Prendergast@AlleghenyCounty.US.
