Free Tax preparation set to start Jan. 17 for qualifying households

Since 2009, the Allegheny County Money In Your Pocket (MIYP) Coalition has prepared 14,756 tax returns for low-to-moderate income households and generated $23.7 million in tax refunds, including $9.2 million in earned income tax credits.

During this past year’s tax season—Jan. 18 through April 15, 2011—the MIYP Coalition prepared more than 6,100 tax returns for eligible households that resulted in $9.7 million in tax refunds, including $3.5 million in Earned Income Tax Credits.
Achieving these impressive numbers would not be possible if not for the time and effort put in by the MIYP volunteers the past three years. Last year alone, 95 volunteers were certified by the Internal Revenue Service and volunteered more than 4,000 hours to tax preparation.

This year is no different. MIYP volunteers will help complete and file tax returns for wage earners whose annual incomes do not exceed $20,000 for an individual or $40,000 for a household that can claim at least one dependent.

Tax returns through DHS
This year, DHS will offer free tax preparation services by appointment only at the Human Services Building, Monday through Thursday evenings between Jan. 17 and April 15, 2012.

A call to 2-1-1 will determine qualification for this free service and is the number to be used to schedule a one-hour appointment at the Human Services Building, One Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, PA, 15222. If calls cannot be completed to 2-1-1, 412-255-1155 can be used.

DHS will also partner with Allegheny Valley Association of Churches (AVAC) to offer tax preparation services at their agency at 1913 Freeport Road in Natrona Heights on Saturdays in February and March. For more information, including scheduling appointments for taxes to be completed at AVAC, please call 724-226-0606.
