DHS recognizes September as ‘National Recovery Month’

DHS is recognizing the month of September as “National Recovery Month” in support of the national campaign to promote of the societal benefits of treatment for substance use and mental disorders. In honor of this month, DHS celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible.

“Substance use and mental health disorders are serious public health problems that affect millions of individuals,” said DHS Director Marc Cherna. “With National Recovery Month we recognize the great impact these disorders have on our family, friends and neighbors and understand that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.”

Throughout September, DHS will continue to spread the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health and encourages everyone to get involved and share this year’s campaign them – "Join the Voices for Recovery: Recovery Benefits Everyone" – by:

  • attending, sponsoring or promoting a recovery month event
  • displaying recovery month banners, logos and flyers
  • submit to the recovery month community event award program
  • participate in the recovery month Flickr challenge
  • view or order the Road to Recovery television series
  • view or order the Road to Recovery radio series
  • submit a question to Ask the Expert
  • submit their own recovery story
  • read/subscribe to the Road to Recovery update
  • read/subscribe to the new media newsletter
  • like recovery month on Facebook
  • follow recovery month on Twitter
  • watch videos on the recovery month YouTube channel
  • subscribe to SAMHSA news
  • order SAMHSA publications and materials
